Please don't think I've flipped, but I have actually started dreaming about guitar building. So much so, I SWEAR I rigged up a hot pipe with a hallogen bulb secreted inside a pipe.

I think it all started last night in my shop when I was gazing at my halogen fire. (and was blinded by it )

I know how hot these bulbs get...there was a story once about a man in a workshop who tipped a hallogen fire over, smashing the bulb...I can't continue to describe how it must have felt to have very very hot glass flying everywhere.

Anyway. Please disregard this thread if this is a load of total nonsense.

Sam I use a heat gun for my touch up pipe (2" piece of SS with a cap on one end) and my cutaway bender. I havn't tried it with the router reostat yet, but I bet I could control the heat that way.

Here's a pic of the cutaway bender.

Get a BBQ lighter, the ones that are basically an electric element - mine is 500 watt, squished in a vise to fit the pipe, and I use a variac to control it, but a 600 watt dimmer would work as well. I find its the right heat when running at about 82-85 volts. I can wrap 85-90 thou EIrw right around a 2 inch pipe into a U in about 3 minutes.

That BBQ lighter is exactly what I`m using inside a 2 1/2" stainless steel pipe. I left my pipe a little long so that I could move to a cooler place on the pipe if need be. Nothing really special about it, as I just mount it in my vise and bend away.

I have scrounged one of those Coe, i guess i'll be redoing this jig now, forget about the 150 watt bulb!

Sam, didn't have a chance to go to my shop today, we were out to visit relatives, sorry! I will get that pic tomorrow though i promiss!

Pretty much Sam .. mine was narrow enough for most of its length to fit in the 2 inch pipe, it had a 3 inch or so round end, and I just sqeezed it in a wood vise. kinda looked like this originally: ======()

Hey Richard, do you just throw the switch and let the gun heat up the pipe to what ever temp it gets to? Or do you have a way of controlling the temp? Just wondering if the reostat or router speed control would work for this.

Rod, My Heat gun (bought it at Canadian Tire for about $30 years ago) has a high low switch and I find between the 2 settings I can always get the perfect temp. I just heat it up on low till water dances on it for Maple and similar woods or on high until water evaporates right off for Rosewood. As I said I used to use a torch but find this much safer and the temp is just right.
